Shoe Care Tips

From Heel to Toe

Gizze Handmade has ten tips you can use to nurture your shoes and keep them “alive” for longer:

1. Rule #1 – Humidity Compromises Longevity

Avoid storing your shoes in shoe boxes as the humidity can compromise their lifespan.

2. Breathability

As much as we want you to wear your shoes, it is best to give them time to air out and breathe to prevent moisture build-up.

3. Turn Down the Heat

Always ensure your shoes are kept out of direct heat sources to prevent them from shrinking, drying out, or cracking.

4. Worn After the Horn

You can protect the back of your shoe with a shoehorn when putting it on.

5. Keep them in Great “Condition”

Cleaning and conditioning your shoes on a regular basis promotes longevity.

6. Safe Travels

Keep your shoes in a well-protected, separate, breathable bag when traveling.

7. These Shoes Were Made for Walking

The protective inner rubber soles will inevitably wear over time. Once you notice any damage, ask a cobbler to replace them.

8. Refer to Rule Number 1 – Avoid any Kind of Liquids

Natural, Hand-crafted leather shoes aren’t waterproof. If they get wet, be sure to dry the inside with newspaper and dry the outside at room temperature.

9. Avoid Wires and Shoe Polish with Suede or Nubuck Materials

Wire brushes and shoe polish can damage the shoe if it is made from suede or nubuck.

10. Feet in the Dirt

If your shoes have been through a rough time, too rough for a dampened cloth to work, try using mild soap and water to clean them.

A Guide to Cleaning and Conditioning

Leather

  • Gently wipe the shoe with a dry cloth to remove any dirt or dust. A dampened cloth or mild soap with water will work for stubborn dirt.
  • Rub shoes with olive oil, almond oil, or any oil-based leather treatment.
  • Admire your newly pampered shoes.

Patent Leather

  • Gently wipe the shoe with a damp cloth and mild soap.
  • Buff with a smooth, soft cloth.

Suede/Nubuck

  • Remove dirt and smudges with a rubber eraser.
  • Brush shoes with a soft brush, in the same direction. There are special soft suede/nubuck brushes ideal for these materials.

Oh…and one last thing!

The stitching on the inside of the shoe may be uncomfortable at first, but once they are worn in and soft, you’ll feel comfort like never before. Take care of your leather babies today and they’ll follow you wherever you may go.

Shoe Sizing Guide

If the Shoe Fits…

Gizze offers half-sizes that are available in U.S sizes. What’s more, medium-width (B-size) for women and medium-width (D-size) for men means you are guaranteed the perfect, most comfortable fit.

We recommend ordering half a size smaller than you would with casual footwear, as shown on the chart. Though it might fit a bit snug at first, you’ll break them in in no time!
