Shoe Care Tips

10 Important Shoe Care Tips

The expert craftsmanship and high-quality materials that go into our shoes make it possible for each pair to last years before needing to be replaced. However, taking proper care of these handmade shoes can help extend their life even further. Here are some of the most important shoe care tips to practice:

  1. Regularly allowing the shoes to breathe for a day is helpful to extending their life.
  2. To prevent the natural leather from shrinking, drying out, or cracking, make sure that the shoes are never left near direct heat sources.
  3. Using a shoe horn when putting on the shoe can help protect the back of the shoe.
  4. Do not store shoes in shoe boxes for long periods of time. Humidity makes this a counterproductive practice when trying to extend their longevity.
  5. Cleaning and conditioning shoes regularly will keep them in good condition.
  6. When travelling, make sure the shoes are properly protected by storing them in their own separate, breathable bag.
  7. There are protective rubber soles inside each pair of shoe; it is normal for these to wear over time. The soles need to be replaced by a cobbler as soon as any damage is noticeable.
  8. Since these shoes are hand-crafted from natural leather, they are not waterproof. Always be sure to properly dry the shoes if they ever become wet. Newspaper can be used to help remove moisture from inside the shoe, while the rest of the shoe should be allowed to dry at room temperature.
  9. If shoes are made from suede or nubuck, refrain from using a wire brush or shoe polish.
  10. Mild soap and water may be used if shoes become dirty and a dampened cloth is not working.

The Proper Steps to Clean and Condition Shoes

Leather Shoes

  1. Gently wipe shoes with a dry cloth to remove any dirt or dust. For stubborn dirt, first try a dampened cloth. If dirt still cannot be removed, mild soap and water may be used.
  2. Rub shoes with olive oil or almond oil; oil-based leather treatments are also suitable.

Patent Leather Shoes

  1. Gently wipe shoes with a damp cloth and mild soap.
  2. Finish by buffing shoes with a smooth, soft cloth.

Suede/Nubuck Shoes:

  1. Using a rubber eraser, remove dirt and smudges.
  2. Use a soft brush to lightly brush shoes; always brush shoes in the same direction to avoid the appearance of being two different colors within opposite strokes. There are soft brushes designed specifically for use on suede/nubuck shoes which are ideal for use. Always avoid wire brushes and polish.

Additional Notes

Natural Variations: Since these shoes are hand-crafted with natural materials, each pair is unique and may vary in color and texture.

Inside Stitching: Stitching on the inside of the shoes may cause some discomfort, but don’t worry! This discomfort is minimal, and will disappear as soon as the stitching softens with wear.

It’s best to order half size smaller than you normally wear in a casual footwear as shown in the size chart. For most, the fit will be slightly snug at first and could take about a few weeks to fully break in.
